![]() ![]() ![]() Studer decided to opt for literal airplane grade custom sized bearings in some spots on this machine. My dad’s business was fledgling (done a lot better since, but that was early days and way too long a story) and a bearing went out on the machine. They’re even geolocking you to specific dealerships/shops based on your location. Studer has its own network of dealerships and maintenance shops and good luck getting parts outside of it. I am intimately aware with the monopoly that is Studer. We had a Studer S31 CNC cylindrical grinding machine. In a previous life I was in machining, working for my dad. Once done, I booted the ancient laptop back to the ghosting software, and wiped the partition I just created with Win XP install.ģ0 mins later, I had the computer back in the machine and it was time to go for a test run.īooted right up, they’re happily running production as we speak. So I wiped the drive, looked and found a XP Professional dvd, and installed a fresh copy. I had to tell our ghosting software to resize the partition, which I think messed it up. The replacement SSD had smaller capacity than the original spinner. I suspected the MBR to be missing/corrupt. Hard drive back into the ancient laptop we keep around just for this kind of stuff. I didn’t.īack in the machine, I booted the computer again. Retraced my steps to see if I missed something. Took the computer back off and pulled it apart again. Got the forces in motion to request lead time and cost for a new (!) computer, which would still have hardware capable of - and running - Win XP (the servos in the machine require specific software which only runs on XP) Started to suspect that something more than just the drive was crapped out. Put a new IDE SSD in it, restored the ghost image, and put it back together. Took the computer out of the machine completely dismantled it to get to the hard drive (it’s basically an all-in-one attached to the machine with a swiveling arm and the back of the case is a inch thick aluminum plate which is the heat sink for the pc). I had a bend press out on the production floor give us the old ‘no hard disk found’.
